Last week, the Valley County Commission managed to defame land use policy, waterways management, fiscal responsibility and public funding literacy—all in one meeting. Whew!
Thank you for attending these meetings so we don’t have to. We have attended too many to put much faith in the process, unhappily proving that they are ruled by their own ignorance!
Oh, we don't attend meetings. The only thing that COVID was good for is that it forced the major deliberative bodies to put their meetings on YouTube, which also generate transcripts. So we just search for what we're interested in. Janet, I think one of the points we were trying to make is that ignorance is an optional thing. People who hold public office nearly always have an ideology that acts like a set of blinkers on a horse. They can only see what's ahead of them, and they have no motivation to turn their heads to take in the side views (or look under the rug at the mechanics of the institutions they oversee). Most local office holders go out of office with exactly the same viewpoints they had when they came in. That makes them very predictable. At least, that's been our observation.
